A brief overview of the Framework

and why it is perfect for guiding product and service innovation towards sustainability and market success

Our approach is collectively called “The Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development” (or simply “the Framework”) – it is a comprehensive model for planning in complex systems. It is openly published and free for all to use. The Framework has helped hundreds of different organisations around the world integrate sustainable development into their strategic planning and create long lasting transformative change. It is constantly being used, tested, refined and developed.

Over the years, it has proved especially useful in guiding product development towards sustainability.

Sustainability: critical for success

The Framework is based on systems thinking; recognizing that what happens in one part of a system affects every other part. Think of a soccer team. We can’t understand why the team lost the game until we look at how each player – the goal keeper, defenders and forwards - all worked together on the field. We won’t learn much if we just study one member of the team. The Framework gives an organisation the tools to look at the whole team, understand the rules of the game, define success, and move towards it together.

Any successful team must have a common language and understanding in order to facilitate cooperation. The Framework provides this shared mental model of sustainability by helping people across organisations, disciplines and cultures to communicate effectively, build consensus and ultimately move toward their vision. We use an upstream approach that anticipates and avoids problems before they occur, rather than reacting to their downstream effects.

This scientifically rigorous Framework gives organisations the tools to perform a gap analysis using the lens of sustainability, and then work toward closing the gap. Furthermore, The Framework complements other sustainability tools and methodologies, such as life cycle analysis or environmental management systems, by providing the context and strategic vision that makes them more effective.

The Framework has been used in strategic decision-making by hundreds of organisations, in multiple sectors, across supply chains and in various scales, offering concrete and simple ways to accelerate change toward sustainability.

Benefits of using this holistic approach in product development:

The Framework helps handle the complexity of sustainability without being complicated
It helps create tangible understanding around what it means to achieve sustainable product or service systems and provides methods for planning how to get there.
It does not only highlight known environmental problems, but helps identify the full gap towards sustainability, including both social and environmental challenges and opportunities across the entire life cycle of the system in focus.
It helps set the rules for what it means to “win” in terms of sustainability. This frees creativity and enables collaboration across professional boundaries to become a great team that plays to win – i.e. that develops products and services that simultaneously helps bridge the gap towards sustainability while achieving other goals and aspirations.
It provides methods for coming up with creative ideas and strategic development pathways towards sustainable products AND market success. This increases the innovation potential.
It provides a process that helps you discover what you don’t know.
Its’ core methods are very much aligned with the design process and concept of design thinking.
It helps with the selection of tools and methods to aid the sustainable innovation process.

Applying the ABCD method on product systems innovation

The A-B-C-D method to applying the Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development consists of four steps which can be used to guide product innovation, or entire organizations, towards sustainability. It is a strategic planning process that frees creativity and aligns short and long term innovation efforts.

This method is based on backcasting from sustainability principles.

You'll find a short outline of the process below.

A = Awareness and Visioning

This first step aligns the innovation team or organization around a common understanding of sustainability and identifies a 'whole-systems' context for their product system; building a common language around sustainability as well as creating a vision of what that product or service system would look like in a sustainable future.

The Natural Step principles of sustainability, basic science and whole-systems approach are presented to develop strategies for living in balance with nature and our global community. Participants review details of the state of the earth's systems, including the ecological, social and economic trends that are undermining our ability to create and manage healthy and prosperous ecosystems, businesses and communities.

During the visioning process, people are encouraged to set ambitious goals which may require radical changes in the product or service system. Some goals may take many years to achieve.

This is where businesses often begin to identify the service they provide independent of any one product (for example, providing energy services versus oil). Incorporating this awareness into the visioning process unleashes innovation and releases the innovation team from preconceived limitations.

B = Baseline Mapping

This step uses the four sustainability principles to conduct a sustainability ‘gap analysis’ of the major flows and impacts of the product across its’ life cycle to see how its activities are running counter to sustainability principles. The analysis usually includes an evaluation of products and services, energy, capital and human resources from 'cradle to cradle'. The assessment also often looks at the social context and organisational culture in order to understand how to positively introduce change. This allows the innovation team to identify critical sustainability issues, their business implications, any assets they may have and opportunities for change.

C = Creative Solutions

In this step, people are asked to brainstorm potential solutions to the issues highlighted in the baseline analysis without any constraints.

Armed with their vision of success and potential actions, organisations look backwards from the vision to develop strategies toward sustainability. This is called backcasting and it prevents people from developing strategies that just solve the problems of today. Instead, they begin with the end in mind, moving towards a shared vision of sustainability (and product success), with each action providing a platform for further improvement.

D = Decide on Priorities

After identifying the opportunities and potential solutions in the ‘C’ step, the group prioritises the measures that move the product or service system toward sustainability fastest, while optimising flexibility as well as maximising social, ecological and economic returns. This step supports effective, step-by-step implementation and action planning. At this stage, innovation teams can pick the 'low-hanging fruit' – actions that are fairly easy to implement and offer a rapid return on investment in order to build internal support and excitement for the journey towards a fully sustainable product.

CONVERGE - Rethinking globalisation in the light of Contraction and CONVERGEnce

"How, given the current situation, do we manage and allocate, today, the Earth’s resources for the survival of a projected global population of 9 to 10 billion people in 2050 - and for their offspring indefinitely?"

So states the over-riding research question for a new and exciting project involving 9 organisations from the European Union old and new, from the developing world and from neighboring Iceland. Rethinking globalisation in the light of Contraction and CONVERGEnce is the full project title for this interdisciplinary research project, which is the first EU FP7 funded research to extend the concept of contraction and convergence beyond emissions trading.

Awarded close to 1.4 million Euros for 4 years research, CONVERGE aims to re-think globalisation by developing our understanding of convergence beyond emissions-trading across wider social, economic and ecological dimensions of sustainability. The principle of Contraction and Convergence (C&C) (Meyer, 2002) developed in the early 1990’s currently provides a framework for a smooth transition to a low level of greenhouse gas emissions from anthropogenic activity. As originally conceived C&C is based on the principle that every global citizen has the right to emit an equal per-capita share of ‘carbon’. It suggests that those levels of global emissions that are acceptable to the Earth be estimated, and that this be used to determine how much each country needs to cut back its emissions.

Taken out of the frame of greenhouse gas emissions, C&C unites a simple ethical principle of basic human equality with the need for sustainability and suggests the broad outlines of a programme to guide positive future change. CONVERGE proposes to extend the concept of C&C and its political applications to embrace the sustainability of trade, economics, society, the natural environment, energy, food, governance, wellbeing and consciousness – a new visionary concept for Sustainable Globalisation in the 21st century. To differentiate between meanings of C&C, this project’s extended version of C&C will be referred to as ‘convergence’.

CONVERGE has a significant role to play in achieving the strategic objective of the EU’s global partnership:

"to promote sustainable development actively worldwide and ensure that the European Union's internal and external policies are consistent with global sustainable development and its international commitments."

Key to the success of this study is the interdisciplinary approach and working with stakeholders from civil society, government and business. CONVERGE seeks to explore convergent sustainability relationships across different scales from local, national, global-regional to global.

Partners in the project include: The University of Bristol, The Schumacher Society and the Schumacher Centre from the UK; from Sweden comes the University of Lund and the Natural Step International; from Hungary GreenDependent and Szent Istvan University; from Tamil Nadu, India comes regional development agency SCAD and from Iceland, the University of Iceland.

Creating a Sustainable Community using The Natural Step: A workshop for City and County planners - Portland, OR, US

This one-day program is designed to introduce public agency planners, planning commissioners and other interested agency staff, council members and citizens to the concept of how to use The Natural Step Framework as a foundation for creating a sustainable community.

In the morning, a presentation will define sustainability and present the basic principles of The Natural Step Framework including the science behind the framework model and case studies. Attendees will participate in small group exercises around the four principles and learn how to apply the framework in the creation of sustainable services for a community.

In the afternoon, a senior planner from the City of Lake Oswego will share how Lake Oswego is using the Natural Step as the foundation for a revision of the city’s comprehensive plan. Later, participants will learn how to use the four principles of sustainability as a strategic planning tool in developing a long term community plan.

Participants will receive Certification Maintenance Credits from the American Planning Association.

Duke Castle is one of the original organizers of the Oregon Natural Step Network. He has delivered hundreds of Natural Step presentations, including training Oregon state leaders on sustainability as part of Governor Kitzhaber's sustainability executive order, and has traveled to Sweden to study how Swedish companies have successfully applied The Natural Step principles. Duke is a former marketing executive with Hewlett Packard and has a BSEE from Cornell University and an MBA from Stanford.

2. Che cosa differenzia il Framework di The Natural Step?

Il Framework di The Natural Step è stato ideato per aiutare le organizzazioni e le comunità a pianificare le strategie nell’ottica della sostenibilità, utilizzando il modello di Backcasting e le Condizioni di Sistema. In particolare, il modello di Backcasting consiste nel definire obiettivi futuri ambiziosi e, in un secondo momento, intraprendere i provvedimenti necessari per raggiungere tali obiettivi (si tratta di un processo opposto al Forecasting, che si basa sulla situazione attuale per costruire le dinamiche future). All’interno dell’approccio di Backcasting, i principi di sostenibilità sono usati per definire un futuro traguardo che rappresenta il successo della strategia implementata. All’interno del modello di Backcasting, i principi di sostenibilità, detti anche Condizioni di Sistema, hanno il ruolo fondamentale di coadiuvare l’intera strategia, che deve condurre agli obiettivi prefissati ed essere coerente con le leggi fisiche di base, come le leggi della Termodinamica. 3. Qual è l’organizzazione di The Natural Step?

The Natural Step è una organizzazione no-profit fondata con l’esplicito obiettivo di creare una società più sostenibile nel suo modo di agire. La nostra missione consiste nel promuovere la comprensione, la competenza, la pianificazione e, soprattutto, le azioni concrete riguardo la sostenibilità. 4. Che cosa intendiamo per sostenibilità?

“Garantire i bisogni attuali senza compromettere la possibilità che le generazioni future riescano a soddisfare i propri” **; così, nei primi anni Ottanta, Gro Harlem Brundtland, primo ministro norvegese, si è espresso sul tema della Responsabilità Sociale d’Impresa per richiamare il problema della sostenibilità della attività economica in relazione allo sfruttamento indiscriminato delle risorse del pianeta Terra. Negli ultimi venti anni moltissime organizzazioni hanno intrapreso percorsi virtuosi in materia di trasparenza e correttezza gestionale nei confronti di fornitori, stakeholders e clienti finali e cittadini per migliorare il loro impatto ambientale ed etico nelle loro zone di attività. Tuttavia, si è ritenuto per troppo tempo che il tema della sostenibilità riguardasse semplicemente il campo astratto della reputazione delle organizzazione fosse, quindi, estraneo al core business dell’impresa stessa. Si pensava, infatti, che le imprese e le comunità avessero il dovere morale di comportarsi come dei “buoni cittadini”, limitando il campo d’azione a iniziative generiche, piuttosto che adottare la visione più appropriata alla loro specifica strategia, con l’ovvia conseguenza di avviare progetti che si rivelavano solamente un costo per le stesse. Nel contesto attuale appare evidente come tutte le organizzazioni, aziendali o meno, debbano operare all’interno del tessuto sociale in cui si trovano, utilizzando le proprie risorse per decisioni strategiche intelligenti, al di là dei benefici apportati all’ambiente. The Natural Step, attraverso le quattro Condizioni di sistema può ovviare a tutto questo, fondando il suo operato su una definizione ben chiara si sostenibilità

5. Di cosa abbiamo bisogno per diventare sostenibili?

Se vogliamo capire come creare una società sostenibile, dobbiamo, innanzitutto comprendere i motivi che hanno portato alla situazione attuale, caratterizzata da comportamenti non sostenibili. Sono quattro le condotte umane che stanno compromettendo l’ecosistema naturale, causando problemi per la nostra e le future generazioni. The Natural step è arrivata a identificare questi quattro fattori, attraverso un meticoloso studio condiviso da un panel di studiosi, mediante un processo condiviso. I quattro principi prevedono di:

eliminare il nostro contributo al progressivo accumulo di sostanze estratte dalla crosta terrestre (es. metalli pesanti, combustibili fossili);
eliminare il nostro contributo al progressivo accumulo di sostanze chimiche prodotte dalla società (es. diossine, PCB e DDT);
eliminare il nostro contributo al progressivo degrado e distruzione della natura e dei processi naturali (es. sovra sfruttamento delle foreste, cementificazione di habitat naturali); e
eliminare il nostro contributo a condizioni che compromettano la capacità delle persone di soddisfare i propri bisogni fondamentali (es. condizioni di lavoro prive di sicurezza e paga insufficiente per vivere).

6. Come potrei iniziare a essere sostenibile?

Il filosofo cinese Lao-Tzu diceva che “un viaggio di migliaia di chilometri inizia sempre con il primo passo”; allo stesso modo, il percorso verso la sostenibilità, sebbene sia un processo lungo e complicato, può incominciare con piccoli accorgimenti che, sommati a quelli futuri, possono contribuire in maniera decisiva a un reale cambiamento. Il primo passo è sicuramente quello di renderti consapevole dell’importanza del concetto di sostenibilità in modo che tu stesso possa diventare protagonista del cambiamento. Ci sono molte risorse che sono disponibili sul nostro sito (vedi le voci “il nostro approccio” e “Risorse”, oltre alla sezione “E-learning”). Successivamente devi crearti un obiettivo che abbia come fine il raggiungimento di stili di vita più coerenti con l’ecosistema naturale; esistono molte società che possono aiutare te e l’attività che stai facendo, sia essa di natura aziendale o meno, e The Natural Step è una di queste.

7. Come si esplicita il servizio di TNS?

Oltre ad usare il Backcasting come modello strategico, la nostra metodologia mira a:

Creare consapevolezza e interesse nei confronti della sostenibilità;
Coinvolgere i membri dell’organizzazione nel processo di pianificazione;
Sviluppare l’innovazione e la creatività nel tentativo di riportare l’armonia tra l’agire dell’uomo e i fenomeni della natura;

8. Quanto costano i servizi di TNS?

I costi dei nostri servizi sono proporzionali al tempo richiesto per implementare la strategia più adatta alle tue esigenze. Alcuni dei fattori che maggiormente incidono sul prezzo finale comprendono:

10. Qual è la posizione di The Natural Step riguardo all’aumento della popolazione mondiale?

The Natural Step non ha una posizione ufficiale sull’aumento della popolazione mondiale, poiché il nostro modello non è prescrittivo al riguardo. Il problema emerge dato che ad un aumento della popolazione mondiale corrisponde un incremento delle risorse della Terra che vengono consumate, minacciando l’equilibrio dell’ecosistema naturale. La sfida odierna risiede nel ricercare un nuovo equilibrio con il sistema naturale, affinché possa continuare a svolgere il compito di mantenere la vita sul nostro pianeta. Questa è la nostra più grande responsabilità. Il Framework di TNS aiuta le organizzazioni a compiere progressi rilevanti verso la sostenibilità, consentendo alle stesse di ottenere ritorni economici sugli investimenti effettuati.

Questa domanda rappresenta senza dubbio una questione di grande interesse. Molti Leader politici preferiscono accusare di negligenza i Paesi industrializzati in termini di politiche indirizzate verso la sostenibilità, piuttosto che intraprendere percorsi virtuosi in questa direzione. In realtà, la Cina, come molti Paesi in via di sviluppo, sta adottando le stesse pratiche delle nazioni occidentali più evolute. Tuttavia, in un simile contesto appare logico e razionale intervenire risolutamente per eliminare i difetti di un sistema che, oramai, non solo presenta poche prospettive di ulteriori sviluppi, ma anche minaccia l’intera società globale di implodere su sé stessa. L’aspetto più significativo è rappresentato dall’opportunità di mettere in pratica i precetti della sostenibilità "sul mercato", consentendo di acquisire notevoli vantaggi competitivi in termini di nuove possibilità di business e di contenimento dei costi. Il successo di un simile cambiamento è testimoniato dai numerosissimi esempi che di organizzazioni che si sono conformate a pratiche produttive più sostenibili, tutte comunque ancorate alle regole della razionalità economica, un fattore critico di successo anche in puri termini di business. Così anche le politiche dei Paesi industrializzati e in via di sviluppo dovrebbero al più presto intraprendere e incoraggiare comportamenti più sostenibili.

Assolutamente NO! il Framework di The Natural Step, attraverso le Condizioni di Sistema, offre una metodologia che propone di adattare le strategie di sostenibilità con il pensiero economico attuale, senza stravolgimenti e rivoluzioni che risulterebbero controproducenti. La sua flessibilità, inoltre, consente a coloro che lo utilizzano di poter cogliere ogni contributo e opportunità che può migliorare la sua concreta applicazione.

13. Come può il Framework di TNS aiutarmi con le scelte che devo prendere ogni giorno?

Le decisioni riguardo la sostenibilità che devono essere prese ogni giorno presentano sempre pro e contro. Tuttavia, può essere riduttivo e fuorviante considerare tali decisioni come trade-off. Se, infatti, abbiamo degli obiettivi ben precisi da raggiungere e una metodologia chiara ed efficace come quella proposta da TNS il problema non si dovrebbe nemmeno porre. Non è corretto porre la questione in questa forma. Il Framework di The Natural Step e l’approccio di Backcasting aiuta a valutare le varie scelte che ci si pongono quotidianamente, superando un’ottica di breve periodo per valutare se un’azione ci può condurre in una direzione coerente con i nostri obiettivi. Non sarà mai una singola azione a condurci verso la sostenibilità, ma un loro insieme integrato e coerente.

14. Le opzioni legate alla salvaguardia dell’ambiente solitamente sono più costose. È realistico aspettarsi che le imprese possano assumere soluzioni più costose per diventare più sostenibili?

Anche questa domanda appare del tutto legittima, ma la risposta in questo caso risulta decisamente più univoca della precedente. Infatti, innovare in nuove tecnologie più rispettose dell’ambiente, può avere ripercussioni molto interessanti anche nel campo della convenienza economica. Appare naturale che il tema del risparmio energetico assuma oggi una importanza fondamentale per coniugare l’aspetto della sostenibilità ambientale con l’imprescindibile assunto della teoria economica della profittabilità dell’investimento effettuato. Infatti, solo se le imprese avranno una convenienza sostanziale nell’implementazione di nuove forme di soluzioni in termini di risparmio sui costi dei consumi, queste saranno disposte a investire nel lungo periodo per la loro realizzazione e, in questo caso, l’aspetto ambientale non rappresenta che una scontata esternalità positiva per la società intera.

Facciamo l’esempio dell’illuminazione negli ambienti degli edifici industriali. L’illuminazione artificiale è presente in tutti gli ambienti dove si svolge l’attività di impresa, siano essi all’interno dei luoghi di produzione e degli uffici, oppure all’aperto, come nel caso dei magazzini e dei piazzali. Tuttavia, nonostante il suo ampio utilizzo, generalmente l’illuminazione non viene considerata quale leva strategica essenziale sia per quanto riguarda la gestione degli impianti, sia con riferimento alla progettazione degli ambienti, generando, in tal modo, perdite tanto ingenti quanto facilmente eliminabili. In realtà, come è già stato accennato, il sistema di illuminazione contribuisce mediamente per quasi un terzo delle spese in energia elettrica, e un suo utilizzo più razionale può comportare un risparmio compreso tra il 30 e il 50% dei suoi costi, grazie allo sviluppo di nuove apparecchi illuminanti e sistemi di controllo più efficienti. La tabella sottostante sintetizza le caratteristiche esposte, fornendo un esempio concreto di risparmio ottenibile utilizzando lampade più innovative.

15. Il processo di Backcasting, che è al centro della metodologia, non sembra troppo radicale. Quali sono gli aspetti che lo differenziano dagli altri processi di pianificazione strategica?

Si tratta di una modalità differente rispetto al solito approccio di previsione che viene generalmente utilizzato per la pianificazione imprenditoriale. Agire sulla base delle previsioni, sistema noto con il nome di Forecasting, può essere utile, tuttavia la strategia sviluppata in questo modo rischia di amplificare e replicare i problemi del passato. Il Backcasting consiste nell’identificare un percorso che parte da un obiettivo desiderabile e ripercorrere a ritroso tutti gli step che conducono alla situazione iniziale. Inoltre, propone 3 domande strategiche che ogni organizzazione deve porsi per ogni azione per applicare con successo la metodologia TNS; in particolare quando devi prendere una decisione implementativa, chiediti se:

Questa azione si muove verso una Visione di successo strategica ed innovativa?
Questa azione rappresenta una piattaforma aperta flessibile verso la tua Visione?
Questa azione ti garantirà un adeguato ritorno economico nel breve periodo?

Il Backcasting risulta così uno strumento fondamentale per sviluppare le proprie strategie nei confronti della sostenibilità.

16. Come si relaziona TNS con gli altri strumenti e metodologie?

Una componente fondamentale del Framework di TNS è rappresentata dal modello dei 5 “livelli mentali” che schematizza vari strumenti e concetti inerenti alla sua strategia. Questi livelli sono:

Questi 5 livelli possono e dovrebbero essere usati insieme per colmare le lacune evidenziate nell’implementazione della strategia. Il modello dei 5 livelli costituisce una modalità molto efficace per impostare nel modo più appropriato la tua strategia vincente. Inoltre, la metodologia di TNS può integrarsi con altri strumenti che non fanno strettamente parte del mondo di The Natural Step. Si pensi ad esempio alla certificazione ISO 14001 i cui vantaggi sono sia di tipo ambientale, grazie alla riduzione degli impatti produttivi, la riduzione del rischio di incidenti e la maggiore certezza rispetto alla normativa ambientale, sia di tipo economico, attraverso il risparmio di materie prime, di energia e la riduzione dei rifiuti, che hanno notevoli effetti positivi sui costi di fornitura e di smaltimento. Le due metodologie sono similari ma non identiche, poiché mentre l’ISO 14001 stabilisce quali procedure devono essere fatte per rendere l’organizzazione più efficiente e sensibile sugli impatti ambientali, il Framework di TNS focalizza la propria attenzione sulla ricerca di obiettivi e valori, fornendo gli strumenti per raggiungerli.

17. Come si relaziona The Natural Step con i cambiamenti climatici? Voi lavorate sulla sostenibilità- perché dovrei avere bisogno di The Natural Step se mi voglio solo occupare dei cambiamenti climatici?

L’obiettivo di “Garantire i bisogni attuali senza compromettere la possibilità che le generazioni future riescano a soddisfare i propri” risulta quanto mai attuale e impellente. Il problema dei cambiamenti climatici rappresenta solo la conseguenza più evidente dell’azione dell’uomo, dato che negli ultimi anni si è venuto delineando uno scenario che sembra inevitabilmente condurre a pesanti condizionamenti sui sistemi aziendali e sociali sia in termini produttivi, per la crescente scarsità dei beni primari (acqua, fonti fossili, pesci, foreste…), sia il progressivo incremento dei costi dovuto anche alle maggiori spese legate ai danni provocati dal cambiamento climatico. Occorre, perciò, avere una maggiore coscienza critica incominciando ad aumentare gli investimenti nelle risorse naturali. Investire nel capitale naturale consentirà, inoltre, un modo più efficace di raggiungere l’obiettivo di un’economia fondata sui servizi per una popolazione in continuo aumento, rispettando il ciclo biologico dell’ecosistema, attraverso una riduzione degli sprechi e un‘intensificazione della produttività delle risorse stesse. Insomma, per fermare questo pericolosa tendenza occorre adoperarsi non in singoli aspetti dell’agire umano, ma con interventi a 360 gradi. In questo senso, The Natural Step rappresenta il compagno ideale per accompagnarti in questo percorso.

18. Perché adottare un approccio sistemico risulta così importante?

Albert Einstein sosteneva che “i problemi più grandi non possono essere risolti con gli stessi strumenti con i quali sono stati creati”. Affrontare i problemi dei sistemi complessi con un pensiero sistemico integrato, che li analizzi in maniera coerente con tutte le implicazioni che possono comportare, rappresenta l’unica maniera per risolverli in maniera definitiva. Spesso, pur con le migliori intenzioni, per risolvere un problema ne creiamo degli altri. Il “System Thinking” permette di poter controllare tutti gli aspetti del sistema che stiamo analizzando, consentendo sia di risolvere il problema alla base, si di prevenire eventuali ripercussioni negative sulle altre parti che compongono il sistema stesso. Il Framework di The Natural Step adotta un approccio sistemico, attraverso i principi di sostenibilità, garantendo una continua attenzione al focalizzazione al cuore dei problemi, piuttosto che agli aspetti a loro complementari.

19. Come veicola TNS i bisogni sociali all’interno della sua metodologia?

L’argomento della sostenibilità ambientale sta assumendo una crescente rilevanza non solo all’interno dell’opinione pubblica internazionale, ma anche quale leva strategica per nuove opportunità di comportamenti sostenibili e di nuovi business. Tuttavia, allo stato attuale, i continui richiami a una maggiore sensibilità nei confronti dello sfruttamento delle risorse naturali vengono sostanzialmente disattesi, non tanto per la mancanza di politiche rivolte a tale scopo, ma in quanto queste ultime difettano drammaticamente di una prospettiva di lungo periodo. In una società dove la questione ambientale ed energetica è abusata perlopiù per finalità che esauriscono la loro portata in un’ottica di breve periodo, la possibilità di valutare l’impatto concreto di misure volte alla riduzione dei costi dell’energia nella prospettiva della continuità aziendale risulta di primaria importanza. Nonostante le teorie e le riflessioni a riguardo siano sempre più numerose, la questione ambientale tende a replicare gli stessi difetti e lacune che caratterizzano le miopi e parziali politiche di salvaguardia ambientale, trascurando una visione di più ampio respiro e di lungo periodo. La metodologia di The Natural Step è particolarmente attenta alle questioni sociali della sostenibilità, ma, data la sua strategia omnicomprensiva, non tralascia gli aspetti economici degli interventi che propone alle organizzazioni, dato che un investimento nella sostenibilità deve anche avere le caratteristiche idonee per essere congruamente remunerato.

Il Framework di TNS non è specificatamente inteso per fornire riposte precise in specifici settori, poiché vuole porsi come una guida al di sopra delle parti. In ogni settore abbiamo esperti che possono individuare di volta in volta le corrette risposte per farvi ottenere il risultato desiderato, facendovi ridurre progressivamente il gap che separa la vostra situazione attuale con il futuro che vi immaginate.

21. Qual è la differenza tra le Condizioni di Sistema e i Principi di sostenibilità?

La tabella sottostante evidenzia la differenza che intercorre tra le Condizioni di Sistema e i Principi di sostenibilità. In particolare, mentre i principi rappresentano le linee guida per costruire una società sostenibile a partire dalla condizioni ideali in cui l’ecosistema naturale dovrebbe essere, i principi di base costituiscono le modalità che le imprese e le organizzazioni dovrebbero adottare per diventare sostenibili.

Overview

Down to Earth is a Swedish ten-year initiative involving space agencies, companies and universities. Conceived by Umbilical Design and Jönköping International Business School, the Down to Earth concept aims to help businesses develop sustainable innovations inspired by space solutions. The Natural Step is pleased to be part of the team, which brings together experts from the space, business and sustainability sectors and uses a cross-over innovation process based on the Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development (a.k.a TNS Framework).

A link between Space, Innovation and Sustainability?

When you think of the space sector’s contribution to sustainability, your first thought might be enormous fossil fuel use and resource impacts from putting man-made objects into space. Yet it is one of those paradoxes that the sector also has a lot of positive things to contribute, as the participating organizations in the Down to Earth initiative are discovering. Here’s some of the insight to be found at the intersection of space, innovation and sustainability:

Technology transfer – Being a well-funded and technically sophisticated sector, the space industry has dramatically pushed the boundaries of what we know and has lead to numerous innovative concepts, technologies and materials. It attracts problem-solvers who need to design for extreme environments, confined spaces, with weight carrying a price premium (in Space, every 10 kg of weight means $1 million in extra costs), and all this with zero margin for error. Backcasting: è un metodo di studio ed analisi che, basandosi principalmente su variabili qualitative, prefigura i risultati attesi in un tempo futuro (visione) e, da essi, torna al presente per individuare i percorsi più plausibili per raggiungerli. Per maggiori informazioni clicca qui.

Biosfera: La Biosfera può essere definita come l'insieme delle zone del pianeta Terra in cui le condizioni ambientali permettono lo sviluppo della vita. .

Capacity-building: rappresenta il processo di trasferimento delle conoscenze da parte di esperti nei confronti di praticanti con la finalità di rafforzare le abilità di questi ultimi per operare con autonomia.

Condizioni di Sistema: The Natural step è arrivata a identificare quattro fattori, attraverso un meticoloso studio condiviso da un panel di studiosi, mediante un processo condiviso, che possono contribuire a concretizzare le strategie per un sistema più sostenibili. I quattro principi prevedono di:

1. eliminare il nostro contributo al progressivo accumulo di sostanze estratte dalla crosta terrestre (es. metalli pesanti, combustibili fossili);

2. eliminare il nostro contributo al progressivo accumulo di sostanze chimiche prodotte dalla società (es. diossine, PCB e DDT);

3. eliminare il nostro contributo al progressivo degrado e distruzione della natura e dei processi naturali (es. sovra sfruttamento delle foreste, cementificazione di habitat naturali); e

4. eliminare il nostro contributo a condizioni che compromettano la capacità delle persone di soddisfare i propri bisogni fondamentali (es. condizioni di lavoro prive di sicurezza e paga insufficiente per vivere).

Costo pieno (Full Costing): è una definizione di costo che tiene conto di tutte le componenti di spesa che devono essere sostenute per realizzare quanto pianificato (costi generali, costi diretti e indiretti, esternalità). Tale fattispecie permette di non trascurare alcuna componente di costo, ma necessita di un processo di attribuzione degli stessi molto dettagliato e complesso.

Decision-Maker: una persona che possiede l’autorità di prendere decisioni. Il “Decision Maker” non sempre gode dell’autorità formale, ma spesso è investita del potere decisionale indipendentemente dalla posizione che riveste all’interno della organizzazione.

Domande di priorità strategica: sono tre domande fondamentali per realizzare efficacemente il processo di Backcasting, il passaggio fondamentale per realizzare la strategia progettata.

Downstream Solutions: sono quelle soluzioni che si occupano degli aspetti più evidenti dei problemi che riguardano i sistemi complessi. Tuttavia, queste soluzioni sono spesso sviluppate per tamponare solamente i sintomi dei problemi, tralasciando di analizzare le cause che hanno fatto emergere tali situazioni critiche.

Eco-municipalità: una eco-municipalità aspira a sviluppare una coscienza critica all’interno della sua comunità sugli aspetti economici e sociali della sostenibilità nel lungo periodo, attraverso l’uso del Framework di The Natural Step, quale guida nell’applicazione di strategie rivolte a una maggiore sensibilità nei confronti dell’ambiente da parte dell’intera comunità. Quando più municipalità si fanno portatrici di queste politiche, possono trovare nuove sinergie le une con le altre, mediante una collaborazione che può trascendere anche i confini regionali o nazionali. Network di eco-municiplità sono presenti in Svezia, Canada e stati Uniti.

Fotosintesi: La fotosintesi è l’insieme delle reazioni durante le quali le piante producono sostanze organiche a partire dall’anidride carbonica e dall’acqua in presenza di luce.

Framework di The Natural Step: rappresenta una guida e un piano di azione che permette agli individui di capire le cause di un comportamento non sostenibile e di trovare le soluzioni più appropriate per muoversi strategicamente verso la sostenibilità. Per maggiori informazioni, clicca qui.

Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development (FSSD): descrive un Framework a 5 “livelli mentali” che viene utilizzato per comprendere e pianificare una strategia rivolta all’implementazione di modelli sostenibili all’interno di organizzazioni e comunità. Il processo di Backcasting e I principi di sostenibilità sono elementi imprescindibili per attuare tale strategia in maniera efficace ed efficiente.

Gas serra: sono i gas atmosferici che assorbono la radiazione infrarossa e che per questo causano l’effetto serra. I gas serra naturali comprendono il vapor d’acqua, l’anidride carbonica, il metano, l’ossido nitrico e l’ozono. Certe attività dell’uomo aumentano il livello di tutti questi gas, causando l’aumento della temperature del Pianeta e I cambiamenti climatici.

Guide all’approvvigionamento: coerenti con i principi di sostenibilità, tali guide descrivono una serie di azioni pratiche per assicurare che le fasi acquisto, controllo dell’inventario, trasporto, ispezione e immagazzinaggio si allineino ai principi della sostenibilità.

Indicatori: misure usate per valutare se un’organizzazione si sta muovendo nella stessa direzione disciplinata dalla visione e dagli obiettivi.

Metodo ABCD: uno strumento indispensabile per il modello di Backcasting, a partire dai principi di sostenibilità. Le lettere rappresentano le fasi riportate di seguito:

· A – Acquisisci consapevolezza (Awareness) dei sistemi naturali e sociali, basati sulla comprensione dei principi di sostenibilità. Successivamente, crea una visione di quello che la tua organizzazione vorrebbe diventare operando con tali principi;

· B – Analizza la situazione attuale in cui si trova la tua organizzazione ed evidenzia dove i principi di sostenibilità non sono rispettati negli Asset dell’organizzazione;

· C – Trova le soluzioni, attraverso un processo di brainstorming, ai punti evidenziati nel punto “B” senza specificare i mezzi tecnologici e le risorse tecnologiche per realizzare tali miglioramenti. Devi essere creativo!!

· D – Decidi le priorità. Ordina le azioni scelte nella fase “C” in base alla loro priorità. Per capire come ordinarle chiediti se:

1. Questa azione si muove verso una Visione di successo strategica ed innovativa?

2. Questa azione rappresenta una piattaforma aperta flessibile verso la tua Visione?

3. Questa azione ti garantirà un adeguato ritorno economico nel breve periodo?

Metafora dell’imbuto: è una metafora che dimostra quali possono essere le conseguenze di proseguire sul percorso della non sostenibilità. Per maggiori informazioni, clicca qui.

Miglioramento continuo: rappresenta l’obiettivo tendenziale verso la creazione di una cultura incentrata sul concetto giapponese di Kaizen, cioè sul miglioramento continuo e incrementale fatto per piccoli passi quotidiani, per migliorare i risultati delle proprie prestazioni.

Modello a 5 livelli: Una componente fondamentale del Framework di TNS è rappresentata dal modello dei 5 “livelli mentali” che schematizza vari strumenti e concetti inerenti alla sua strategia. Questi livelli sono:

1. Il sistema

2. Il successo

3. Le strategie

4. Le azioni, e

5. Strumenti.

Questi 5 livelli possono e dovrebbero essere usati insieme per colmare le lacune evidenziate nell’implementazione della strategia. il modello dei 5 livelli costituisce una modalità molto efficace per impostare nel modo più appropriato la tua strategia vincente.

Pianificazione per le Comunità: ogni attività che viene proposta alle comunità, che possono includere, indicativamente, Regioni, Enti Locali, Comuni. L’attività svolta per queste tipologie di Comunità può ricomprendere diversi aspetti, come la pianificazione strategica per la sostenibilità, l’utilizzo di acqua o di terreno e il suo sviluppo economico e produttivo.

Pianificazione Strategica: è quel processo con il quale si fissano gli obiettivi e si indicano i mezzi, gli strumenti e le azioni per raggiungerli in una prospettiva di medio/lungo periodo.

Piano di sostenibilità: comprende obiettivi integrati e complementari che includono aspetti economici, sociali e ambientali volti al raggiungimento di pratiche di comportamento più sostenibili. Un piano di sostenibilità focalizza la propria attenzione, innanzitutto, sullo sforzo comune di integrare tutti questi aspetti in un sistema coerente tra le sue parti, affinché sia possibile conseguire gli scopi che sono stati prefissati.

Shareholder: è colui che detiene una quota del capitale, ovvero un azionista.

Sostenibilità: con riferimento alla società indica un "equilibrio fra il soddisfacimento delle esigenze presenti senza compromettere la possibilità delle future generazioni di sopperire alle proprie" (Rapporto Brundtrand del 1987).

Stakeholder: qualunque altro soggetto che è portatore di interessi nei confronti del successo dell'azienda (fornitori, clienti, finanziatori esterni come le banche, la società in generale)

System Thinking: metodologia che permette di poter controllare tutti gli aspetti del sistema che stiamo analizzando, consentendo sia di risolvere il problema alla base, si di prevenire eventuali ripercussioni negative sulle altre parti che compongono il sistema stesso. Il Framework di The Natural Step adotta un approccio sistemico, attraverso i principi di sostenibilità, garantendo una continua attenzione al focalizzazione al cuore dei problemi, piuttosto che agli aspetti a loro complementari. Interface – Interface is one of the worlds largest carpet manufacturers and a sustainability pioneer that has shown that sustainability and sustainability focused innovation is good for business. We’ve been involved from the start. Read more here (in Swedish).
Nike – The Natural Step worked with Nike ten years ago to jump-start their earlier sustainability work and in 2008 we began helping them create a new set of innovation goals for their product lines. Lately we’ve been helping them with refining their tools for material selection and decision making in the innovation process. Read more here and here.
Max Burger – Our favourite fast food chain that recently was listed by Fast Company as one of the top ten most innovative companies in food for their work with sustainability. They’ve become especially famous for putting the carbon footprint of their products on their menus, but they are leading the way in many other ways as well. ICI Paints (now AkzoNobel) – Our UK colleagues have worked for several years to help ICI Paints, the world’s largest paint manufacturer, to innovate towards sustainable paint systems. Read an innovation report here and a case study here.
Scandic Hotels – In the early nineties, Scandic was a hotel chain in deep financial trouble. Through their sustainability work they turned the ship around as they reinvented their brand, reduced costs, improved customer experience and motivated their workforce. Experience Scandic's story here.
SLCA (Strategic Life Cycle Assessment) – This approach helps organisations define, assess and communicate product sustainability. It can be described as a tool and an accompanying process that gives you a strategic overview of the full scope of social and ecological sustainability at the product level.
