Welcome to a two day course arranged by The Natural Step and SVID, the Swedish Industrial Design Foundation.

In the course you will learn methods for how you and your organization can work with sustainability as a starting point for new and successful products and services. You will develop a strategic competence around how sustainability focussed innovation processes can influence the world.

The course mixes theory and real cases with insightful workshops, discussions and practical exercises.

Course content

Preparing for the course - e-learning

As preparation for the course, you are asked to go through the 90 minute long e-learning module entitled Sustainability – Step by Step. The module introduces terminology and methods around sustainable development.

During the course

Lectures, practical exercises and real cases around how The Natural Step methodology can be used to guide product- and service development towards sustainability. These two days are equivalent of a foundations course from The Natural Step and participants will receive a course certificate (level 1 training).

Practice communicating how sustainability can be integrated into product and service development.
Understand the relevance and use of different tools in relation to sustainable innovation (e.g. LCA, Biomimicry, Product-Service Systems, etc)

This intensive 3-day practical course is geared towards experienced sustainability professionals, managers, analysts, academics, and consultants who want to deepen their learning, refine their application of The Framework for Sustainable Development and enhance their ability to integrate sustainability meaningfully in organizations.

The Natural Step Sustainability Learning Programs are
designed using a dialogue education approach to learning
design and facilitation. You will actively engage in hands-on,
participatory learning tasks that will help you dive into the
content, apply it to real situations, and prepare to transfer
what you learn to your business, community, or organization.

Course Structure

The course is build upon 3 modules:

the Science Module,
the Change Management Module, and
the Application Module.

The first two days (October 10-11th) are focused on the Science Module and the Change Management module. Then you will return home and conduct an assignment. Then we will meet a couple of months later for a one day follow-up (December 14th) where we share experiences and learning.

Participants should plan to spend somewhere between 2-4 days in total on the assignment, over the 8 week period between the first course event and the second. During the assignment you will be given a coaching session with an Advisor from the Natural Step.

Course objectives

After this course you will be able to:

Plan for how to mobilise an organisation to act strategically towards sustainability. This means that you will be boosted with tools and know-how around how to:
- assess an organisation's strenghts and weaknesses in terms of sustainability culture, leadership, products and services, operations, communication and governance;
- create a sense of urgency and opportunity around sustainability;
- address objections; and,
- explain what the Framework can offer
Have confidence in the natural and social science basis of sustainability and the strategic sustainable development framework.

After the course you will have:

Practiced carrying through a sustainability assessment using the sustainability principles
Designed and received feedback on a sustainability engagement plan for an organisation
Participated in a course that mixes theory and real cases with insightful workshops, discussions and practical exercises.

The course will be taught and facilitated by experienced Senior Advisors from The Natural Step.

The target group for this course is only restricted by the need for the participants to have one of the following prerequisites:

Take your MBA skills to the next level by applying your strategy, project management, sales, marketing, negotiation, and facilitation learning to the sustainability field through a week of applied exercises, simulations, and live case studies. Be inspired by a faculty of national sustainability leaders and authors. Hone your skills through practical real-life cases and presentations of your findings to corporations seeking solutions to complex sustainability challenges.

You will be whipped into sustainability shape through an intense five-day Bootcamp, and will continue with coaching and team touch-points over the following four months. After the Bootcamp, you will have access to coaching from our expert advisory team who work with clients such as Nike, Pratt & Whitney Canada, and Research in Motion (RIM).

Cost

The MBA Sustainability Leadership Bootcamp is generously funded by our lead partner Cenovus, with support from ENMAX and the Suncor Energy Foundation. The program includes breakfast and lunch each day of the Bootcamp session, as well as one networking evening.

Pong is a founding member of The Natural Step Canada and has worked with a wide range of clients to share his expertise on sustainability, governance, and organizational learning, including a strategic positioning and organizational change program with ISL Engineering and Land Services, a comprehensive training and visioning program for the Landmark Group of Builders, and an award-winning broad-based community visioning and planning initiative with the City of Williams Lake, BC. Alexandre Magnin, Senior Sustainability Advisor

Alexandre works with communities, businesses, and organizations in strategic sustainability planning. He has delivered dozens of capacity building workshops and is currently working on a product sustainability assessment tool for The Co-operators, Canada’s largest insurance co-operative. He is also supporting Pratt & Whitney Canada in the implementation of their sustainability strategy. Tamara Connell, Associate Sustainability Advisor

Tamara has been working with The Natural Step Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development since she began her Master’s degree in Strategic Leadership towards Sustainability (MSLS) at the Blekinge Institute of Technology (BTH) in Sweden, back in 2005. After completion of her degree, she spent one year working with the Vancity Group to enhance their sustainability performance and leadership. After that, she returned to Sweden to join the teaching team at BTH, eventually holding the role as MSLS Programme Director for several years. She has stewarded about 250 talented graduates through their studies in Sweden, and has taught around the world, including in Canada, USA, France, China, and on the Peace Boat’s 74th global voyage. Sustainability for Leaders. A transformative approach to sustainability thinking, strategy, and results

On April 10th and 11th we are offering a 2-day certificate training in The Natural Step framework for strategic sustainable development. This training takes place in Eindhoven, the Netherlands.

Course objectives

The intensive 2-day practical course is geared towards experienced sustainability professionals, managers, analysts, academics, and consultants who want to deepen their learning, refine their application of The Natural Step Framework for Sustainable Development and enhance their ability to integrate sustainability meaningfully in organizations.

As specific outcomes of this comprehensive two- day course, you will:

Conduct a Sustainability Value Assessment of your business, community, or organization
Strategize how to mobilize colleagues, address objections, and get buy-in to advance sustainability in your business, community, or organization
Practice an elevator pitch to make the case for sustainability
Explore the ecological and social science basis of The Natural Step Framework
Reframe your organization's purpose in terms of meeting Basic Human Needs
Situate The Natural Step Framework vis-à-vis other sustainability methods
Practice techniques for facilitating a sustainability change process

Cancellation policy

Cancellations must be received in writing. The amount paid, minus a 20% processing fee, will be refunded for all cancellations received 30 days prior to the course start date. However, no refund will be issued for cancellations received within 7 days of the course start date. Note that we are not issuing credit notes at this time but that you may substitute another person if you are unable to attend.

As part of its Sustainability Transition Lab program and with the support of the Alberta Real Estate Foundation, The Natural Step Canada is hosting an experiment in Edmonton this fall.

Our mission: to name what the dream is for our city and our neighbourhoods and make the impossible possible.

Are you aged 18-30 (give or take) and working (paid or unpaid) to make your neighbourhood and city better?

This is an invitation to young people in the Edmonton area to declare what the “impossibly awesome” neighbourhood looks and feels like. What is it for? Who does it serve? How does it operate? What are the characteristics of a neighbourhood that meets the needs of today and tomorrow? What will our social, energy, economic, ecological, cultural, and government systems look like?

System change requires the participation of a wide range of perspectives and values. Join us to share yours and declare Edmonton’s future.

It will take a whole city to respond to the youth declaration of the impossible neighbourhood. You share this dream and you believe the impossible is possible. You believe that young and old must work together to make it happen. You believe that people of various walks of life and perspectives can work together. You are openly influenced by the dreams of youth and accept the challenge to be responsible for the consequences of today’s actions.
